The Federal College of Wildlife Management, New-Bussa is one of the training arms of the Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria (FRIN), the college was established in 1978 to train technical and sub-technical staff in the area of Wildlife conservation and management. It has its first intake of students on the 17th March, 1980. The trainees (Wildlife Guards and Scouts) went through a six month course in Wildlife Conservation and Management. The admission into Ordinary Diploma (now National Diploma) Programme started in 1981 while the first intake for the Higher Diploma (now Higher National Diploma) programme were enrolled in September 1984. However, the scope of the programme of the college has been expanded.

The Federal College of Wildlife Management has the following mandates: To train technical and sub-technical manpower in Wildlife Conservation and protection duties aimed at sustaining scientific management and development of the game protected ecosystem. To carry out research into wildlife production conservation and management problems. To disseminate research findings through teaching under Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria and other related organizations. To render wildlife technical training assistance to Universities offering wildlife courses in Nigeria and other African countries through students attachment programmes. To train manpower for the improvement of animal production thus, enhancing the food base of the nation. To train intermediate and middle level technical manpower for the nations Tourism Industry
